From Prison to Purpose: Meet Tara
I’m Tara. God pulled me out of ashes - literally.I teach English online to students in Vietnam, Taiwan, and Indonesia. But a few years ago, I was in a broken moment and prayed, “God, if You’re real, change my life.” Be careful what you ask God for. I landed in prison. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Because there, I met Him. He gave me a job inside - hand-painting products and making cards. You can’t buy a card in prison, so I became “the card lady.” Birthdays, family visits, goodbyes. God gave me a business when I had no one. He gave me a parole address in Joburg when I’d only been there 2 weeks. I served 43 months, finished parole faithfully, and walked out different. In prison He gave me Isaiah 61:3: _He gives beauty for ashes._
His message was clear: “You’ll help other parolees rebuild. They need a way to make a living when the world only gives them judgment.”The cycle of crime continues because we’re an unforgiving world. But God forgives 70x7, and then a thousand times more.Since leaving, I’ve made mistakes. Learned hard lessons. Worked hospitality jobs that broke me. But I worked - because it’s godly to earn. I got my TEFL, taught online, and kept going. Now I’m building Ashes2Artistry.
Every design is from that verse. Every hoodie is for the one who feels buried. The phoenix, the armor, the cross - it’s all proof that God rebuilds what we think is dead.A portion of every sale goes directly into job + skills training and entrepreneurial programs for parolees - because second chances shouldn’t stop at the prison gate. When you wear this, you’re not just buying a hoodie. You’re saying “I believe in comebacks.”
For me. For them. For anyone who needs to rise.Risen. Restored. Still rising.
